Production[edit]

Development and casting[edit]

Puli was director S. J. Suryaah's dream project.[7] Initially he planned to make the movie with Akshay Kumar in Hindi[citation needed] and later with Vijay in Tamil[7] and he sent bound scripts to both superstars. But both the projects did not happen. The storyline was also discussed with Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi.[8] Later, after the confirmation from Kalyan, it was finalised to make in Telugu with Pawan Kalyan . Hansika Motwani was originally signed to play the heroine[9] but was replaced by Nikeesha Patel, who made her acting debut in this film.[10] The film was sent to the censor board on 4 September and received an A certificate.[11]

Filming[edit]

The movie was shot in various parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, as well as in Malaysia, Singapore, Bangkok and Dubai.[12] The filming was almost completed by May 2010, but the songs were shot from 18 May onwards only.[13]Pawan kalyan's acting fee for this film was 10 crore (US$1.4 million).Puli was made with a budget of 40 crore (US$5.8 million) from which 35 crore (US$5.1 million) is production costs.

Title[edit]

The movie was originally titled 'Komaram Puli'. 'Komaram' was taken from the surname of the Gond martyr Komaram Bheem, who fought against the erstwhile Asaf Jahi dynasty for the liberation of Hyderabad State.[14] However, following the objections by Komaram Sony Rao, grandson of Komaram Bheem, and also by a section of Telangana Joint Action Committee activists who called for a boycott of the film, the movie was renamed with title 'Puli' on the second day of its release.[4][5] The soundtrack album is titled 'Komaram Puli'.

Release and reception[edit]

The film was released worldwide with 950 prints in 1250 theatres,[15][16] a record of sorts for a Telugu film. The film's release faced a minor roadblock in the form of its title.[17][dead link] The film critic from NDTV warned the audience by saying 'watch the film at your own risk. It's a big-budget film with a solid casting. Just laugh at the poorly directed action scenes.'[18] The background score by A. R. Rahman and camerawork by Binod Pradhan were appreciated and many critics rated them as the highlight of the movie.[citation needed]

Its Nizam rights were sold to Geetha Arts for 12 crore (US$1.7 million) which is a record sum.[6]

Puli ticket rates price was sold for 75 (US$1.10) in its first week[19]

The makers of the film re-edited it due to very poor reviews and re-released the shortened version on 15 September 2010.[2]

Soundtrack[edit]

The film features a soundtrack consisting of 6 songs composed by A. R. Rahman and lyrics penned by Chandrabose. The highly anticipated soundtrack album was released on 11 July 2010 by Sony Music.[20] The release rights of the album was purchased by Sony Music for 20 million.[21] The audio was launched by K Rosaiah, Rahman and his mother Kareema Begum in a function held at H.I.C.C Novotel, Hyderabad.[20][22] The function was attended by K Rosaiah, S. J. Suryaah, Allu Aravind, Pawan Kalyan, Nikeesha Patel, Shriya Saran, A. R. Rahman, Chandrabose, Anand Sai, Singanamala Ramesh, S. R. Murthy and many others.[23] The soundtrack got overwhelming response and became a hot seller. The audio sales reached a total of 300,000 of CDs in the first three days, which is an all-time record in Telugu film history.[24]

The picturisation of the songs was also noted. Two songs were choreographed by Bollywood choreographer Ahmed Khan. The songs he choreographed were 'Power Star' (Pawan Kalyan's introduction song) and 'Dochey' (an item number featuring Shriya Saran). The songs were filmed in two schedules at Annapurna Studios beginning from 18 May.[13] Of the six songs written for the film, four songs were directly included in the film while the remaining two served as background songs.[12] Lyricist Chandrabose collaborated with Rahman for the second time through this film. He took almost three months to write the song 'Amma Thale', while all it took to write the song 'Maaralente' was 90 minutes.[12] A. R. Rahman's original score also received critical praise. Rahman collaborated with artists from three European countries to re-record the background score.[12]

Puli is the soundtrack to the 2010 Telugu action filmof the same name, directed by S. J. Suryaah and starring Pawan Kalyan. The soundtrack includes six songs composed by A. R. Rahman and lyrics written by Chandrabose. The album was released on 11 July 2010 by Sony Music.[1] The album was released under the film's working titleKomaram Puli, with the title of the film being changed to Puli upon release.

The album and background score received positive critical reception upon release. It was nominated for various music awards such as Best Music Director and Best Background Score (Rahman), and Best Female Playback (Shweta Mohan for 'Amma Thalle'), but most of the awards in the Best Music Direction and Background Score categories mainly lost to Ye Maaya Chesave, composed by Rahman himself. Shweta Mohan won Best Female Playback for the song 'Amma Thalle' in the 2010 Mirchi Music Awards South.

Release[edit]

The release rights of the album was purchased by Sony Music for 2 crore (US$290,000) 2 crores.[2] The track listing was published on A. R. Rahman's official website on 6 July. A 30 second promo of the song 'Maaralente' was released through this website on the same day. Promos of other songs were released the next day. The audio was launched on 11 July 2010 by the then Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah, Rahman and his mother Kareema Begum in a function held at H.I.C.C Novotel, Hyderabad.[1][3] The function was attended by K. Rosaiah, S. J. Suryaah, Allu Aravind, Pawan Kalyan, Nikeesha Patel, Shriya Saran, A. R. Rahman, Chandrabose, Anand Sai and many others.[4]

Overview[edit]

The picturisation of the songs were also noted. Two songs were choreographed by Bollywood choreographer Ahmed Khan. The songs choreographed by him were 'Power Star', the introduction song of Pawan Kalyan and 'Dochey', the item number featuring Shriya Saran. The songs were filmed in two schedules at Annapurna Studios beginning from 18 May.[5] Out of the six songs, four songs were directly included while the remaining two were background songs.[6] Lyricist Chandrabose collaborated with Rahman for the first time through this film. However, the lyrics penned by him got notably mixed reviews and even his name was not credited in the front CD cover.[7] The lyricist was also criticised for using certain words like 'heroin' and 'cocaine' in the track 'Power Star'.[8] He took almost three months to write the song 'Amma Thale' while all it took to write the song 'Maaralente' was 30 minutes.[6] The original score, composed by Rahman also won critical appreciations. He collaborated with artists from three European countries for re-recording the background score.[6]

The first song in the movie is 'Namakame', picturised on Saranya, when she prays at a temple before the birth of her son. The next song, 'Maham Maye' is a duet, picturised on Nikeesha Patel, when she tries to grab the attention of Pawan Kalyan. 'Amma Thale' comes in close succession and is of the similar theme. Fourth song, 'Dochey' is an item number by Shriya Saran, who is a casino dancer in the film. 'Power Star', is picturised on Nikeesha and Pawan and it praises the style and hero qualities of Pawan. The last song, 'Maaralente', is a background song used throughout the movie, notably during the Puli team formation and the climax scenes.

Reception[edit]

The soundtrack got generally positive reviews and has become a hot seller during recent days. 3 lakh units of the audio CD was sold within few days after audio release.[9]

The soundtrack has also received positive critical reviews. Behindwoods commented that the soundtrack as usual is a great piece from Rahman.[11] A review on NDTV said, 'As far as music is concerned, the re-recording is excellent, but the songs are only so good.'[12] Nowrunning reviewed the music saying 'A.R. Rahman's music and background score is as always melodious.'[13] However, a review by Rediff said, 'Rahman's music is not as great as expected except for the song Maaralente which seems touching, fairly powerful and reverberates in the mind even after the film is over.'[14]
